Fatty acid chlorides and the shift to mild surfactants

The move away from sulphate surfactants in personal care has increased demand for cocoyl and lauroyl chloride, the feedstocks for amino acid surfactants.

Personal care formulators have moved steadily away from harsh sulphate surfactants towards milder amino acid derivatives. That shift depends on fatty acid chloride chemistry.

Transpek supplies cocoyl chloride and lauroyl chloride, the acylating agents behind sodium cocoyl glycinate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium cocoyl sarcosinate and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate.

Why the acid chloride route

Acylating an amino acid requires an activated carboxyl group. The acid chloride route delivers high conversion and a clean impurity profile — which is what allows these surfactants to be used in facial and leave-on products.
