Why backward integration into thionyl chloride matters to our customers

Transpek manufactures its own thionyl chloride, giving customers control over the cost, quality and continuity of every acid chloride downstream of it.

Thionyl chloride is the reagent that converts carboxylic acids into acid chlorides and alcohols into alkyl chlorides. For a producer of acid chlorides, it is the single most important input.

Transpek pioneered thionyl chloride manufacture in India and continues to produce it captively. That backward integration means the quality, cost and availability of the reagent behind our catalogue are within our own control rather than a supplier’s.

What it means commercially

For customers in regulated industries, supply continuity is often worth more than unit price. Qualifying a new source of a pharmaceutical intermediate is expensive and slow; a supplier who can guarantee continuity is therefore treated as a long-term partner.
